Jake's PC is the Senor guard of a highpriestess. My PC's wife and daughter are Slaves in the Priestess service. Over the Past year Jake's PC has come to veiw my PC's daughter, as his own daughter or perhaps granddaughter. He has also noticed that My PC and his wife are infact married, something I see as forbidden amongst Slaves. So far he has decided not to say anything.

With the Return of the gods my PC's daughter is taken by them.

Any good?

Works for me.

Sounds good to me. Also, I assume that with the priorities now listed, now would be a good time to lay my priorities picks and how I've assigned them? I tend to find assigning stats to a character then basic the background off of that to be considerably easier than writing a background from scratch and then assigning stats; the stats tell me where he is, and from there I can work out how he got there. As pretty much everything has been communal thus far, I guess there's no harm in showing the current stats:

Exactly. No mods to Attributes, Skills, SAs etc. save those in the Priority table.

No. Gifts are a valuable commodity, and Flaws are played as major aspects of a character. It is not for no reason that I’ve written that I’m going to press home your characters’ Flaws; I’m going to press them like you’ve never seen it. Ty not to think of Flaws as a currency you can use to get more Gifts – that’s a sure way to really sink your character in one of my games.

On the other hand, if you really feel that your character concept just needs that additional Gift or Flaw, tell us about it and we’ll see what we’ll do.

This niece (?) would not be of the Labourer, but of the Artisan caste, and probably from one of the more iwell-off families within it. Which makes little difference, though, as it is still a different caste from Hector’s warrior. Just something to keep in mind in case Hector is keen on being in love with a poor girl.

Crow Caller wrote:

I think we have dropped the cild-snatching angle, haven’t we? Anyway, there’s nothing to prevent us from having a God demand to be given a slave child owned by the temple, should the whim strike him.

As we have thought about there being little contact between the male slave and his relations that seems to suggest that higgin’s priest and the priestess Jake’s guy is serving are antagonists; Hector’s warrior, if he is really attached to higgin’s priest, would then also be set to go against Jake’s warrior. Jake’s warrior and CC’s slave, even though in the priest’s employ, are set to soone or later be on friendly terms.

I like this antagonism very much, but I want everybody to be cool with it.

Also, I think we should have some closer relation between Jake’s and Hector’s warriors. Depending on wether you two want them to be inimical towards each other right from the start of have your masters’ antagonism be more of a problem for your PCs the warriors can either be rivals of a kind or alternatively Jake’s might be the mentor/teacher of Hector’s. Which would you prefer?

At this junction we need Ian to decide which of his three concepts he is going to play. If I am to offer any input I’d vot for either the master artisan or his niece.

Also, I want every one of you to start thinking about your character’s Kicker; I assume all of you know what that is, right. Hector, if you shouldn’t, please read it up on page 1 of this thread and ask if anything’s not clear.

Well, I really like the Berserker/Rage guy, and I thought Area Knowledge (a little used gift in my experience) would really suit a Descended. Ofcourse Berserker is not a given since permission must be gained for Companion Flaws.

That works.

It should still work for what Hector wants, though its up to him

Either way should work to bring mine and Jake's character a little more inline with one another.

Would my daughter being taken be good enough?

Hector, I’ve just seen your warrior, and I want to ask you about a few things that have caught my eye.

Most importantly, Bad Temper. Do you see your character as a nasty guy or as somebody who just tends to lose control despite himself?

Then, Proficiencies. You have made knives his primary weapons, which could be seen as a slant away from open combat to somebody who’s more of a cloak-and-dagger type. Is this intentional? Do you want him to portray him thus?

Crow Caller, about Ghost Jaguar (I don’t find where you posted the thing about the names, but I find it cool, btw).

First of all, sorry, I shold have stated it  – no weapon schools, only individually-bought Proficiencies.

Then about your Priority trade. I’m totally cool with it, and I know that you like to play tough warrior-types, but do you really think it necessary to trade up Proficiencies? The jungle isn’t exactly a place where you battle dangers, it’s rather one where you avoid them; a Descended trying to go head-to-head with the jungle is a dead Descended. For their survival, they rely rather on their Perception and Wits than on Strength and Toughness, to speak metaphorically.

That said I suggest that you forgo the Proficiencies/Flaws trade, but if you won’t that’s totally up to you.

I’d also suggest you give some thought to your choice of weapons. Currently, Ghost Jaguar has a warrior’s Proficiencies, but shouldn’t he rather have a hunter’s? And while I know that you love your recently discovered Atlatl I wonder wether a culture that has learnt to travel light and make do with whatever is available would really rely on having additional pieces of equipment at hand and would not much rather focus on the simplest weapon, the javelin, respectively dart, free of any fancy prerequisites? Again, it’s your call.

Concerning your choice of Flaws I think that you have blundered a bit. A hot-headed Descended would not survive childhood, the jungle would kill him. And a hot-headed berserk slave would probably go into a murderous rage the first time he was mistreated, resulting in his own death. I really suggest you give the Flaws another very good thought.

Sorry that I have so much negative stuff to impart, and you’re of course free to ignore it all, but I really suggest you rework your character with the thought in mind that he’a a hunter, not a warrior, that he comes from a culture that cannot afford to rely on anything beyond the own mind and body, and that life in the jungle would have taught him that you do not try to overcome, but to evade dangers.

Very much the latter; not to the point of flying into a berserker rage, but he's fairly easy to anger and when angry he has a habit of saying and doing things he may later regret. As to knives being his primary form of combat, my idea was that since the warrior class are mostly peace keepers and most of the other combat that they'd get into tends to be ceremonial in nature, assuming I've interpreted the current consensus correctly, any ranged weapon he chooses to use needs to be something that can be prepared quickly - hence a thrown weapon - and his melee weapon of choice would likely be something low key; not hidden, but not over the top.

That said, I may well swap dagger and pole arms around, use throw spear instead of throw knives and take a few points from that to make up for the lowered defaults on sword/shield and mass weapon/shield. Either that or I could make thrown spears 4 and pole arms 8 (I seem to recall that being the maximum for a single proficiency at priority A) if that makes more sense.

No need to change anything, Hector, your character's fine as he is, I just wanted to know where we are at with him.

A blind man stranded in the middle of a highway should not knock back offers to help him corss, likewise a Player should not ignore advice, especially from the GM.

Ofcourse that doesn't mean I'm going to take it all, I am however going to discuss it all.

Quote:

That's cool I'll change it up a bit, can I ask why though? (The main reason I like the Progressive school is for its Specially Ability that lowers Duck and Weave).

I see the Jungle as a very harsh place, where you can't just roll a Hunting Check and the go home with dinner. Rather you roll your hunting check, and then you roll initiative. Also, In such a harsh enviroment, I think the threat that a rival tribe will clash with you to take your food, weapons, and women is a high possibility.

Thoughts?

This might surprise you, but I actually sis the trade to give myelf more Flaws in Anticipation that you would not allow the Take a Gift Take a Flaw balance/Trade off, and not to get more Proficiencies.

When I make Characters I almost always build them around an Anti-Destiny, and their Flaws, I guess I am a sucker for the tragic hero type?

Quote:

An excelent point and one I struggled with, in the end I simply liked the idea of wielding a small shield and warclub too much. I tried to keep his Hunting Skills (Atlatl and Spear) as high as possible though.

Quote:

:D I do love the Atlatl, I think it adds a lot of flavour to the setting too, however it might get dropped in my revision of the Prof's.

Quote:

I was picturing his Flaws as a recent development, he certainly did not have them whilst living in the Jungle, however I thought that living in captivity unable to get to your wife and children, and then hearing your daughter has been taken to who knows what ends would justify tipping the scale from angry slave to berserker.

I will see what others have to say on the Rage/Berserk issue. Also I think I should talk a bit about how I play Rage. I don't see rage as screaming and yelling, but more as a white hot fire that burns deep inside, that can only be sated by distance or my destruction.

Finally, one SA I am almost certainly going to take is Conscience, to help reighn in his rage, and because, again, I love the tragic hero.

(You will notice similarities between this Character and one I posted on the boards, I never got to explore the latter the way I wanted, and this setting seems to really adress the issues I wanted to, especially What Price is worth Freedom).

Cheers!

Hm, my original thought was a daughter with her being endangered by The Taking. As for the antagonist angle, I think we established that priests and priestesses have fundamentally different functions in the temple, so, what's the purpose of the antagonism if either cannot achieve other's position? Or they're both plotting to be the new head of the temple? If so, they could even be brother and sister, except that I saw my character as considerably older... and thus Jake's character could know us both very well (despite his current alliances) as he was already a bodyguard of our father, etc.

Since new gifts have to approved by others... I assume than all other new stuff must be approved as well. In summary... could my character have Snake Throwing Proficiency?

Sure, I don't see why not, I would treat it as Proficiency Throw Snakes, or Throw objects, and then use your Handle Animal skill to set the ATN.

Range would be about the same as a dagger.

This is ofcourse just My Opinion :D

Sounds cool.

Ofcourse, the snake would then have to make an attack of its own, but maybe any MoS from your attack could serve as Bonus Dice in the Snake's attack? Kind of like when you aid someone.

Cheers!

Then again, we have a Toss manouver... maybe something connected with that? Derived from Poisonous Animal Handling skill?
